Apply shipping by product type - physical or not
It would be good to be able to apply shipping to certain products and not others. Use case would be digital products or in my case, a donation (where there is nothing to ship) and physical products that require shipping with tax added to the shipping cost. Customers may have both types of items in the check out at the same time.

Hey guys - we solved this problem by looking at the weight value of a product to determine if shipping should apply or not. If there is a value greater than 0, some shipping fields are presented. If the value is 0 or blank, we're presenting a tax option. It's not as easy and convenient as applying it to each product in the backend. But it could work for now!?

Do you mean that if the cart only has digital/'unshippable' products in, the shipping dropdown wouldn't show?
If there's a mix of physical and digital products in the order, then would the store owner already know which the shipping applies to?

Matt Walter: The store owner should know which ones shipping applies to, and I don't mean the shipping should not show. What I'm saying is that the shipping should only be charged to the physical items not the digital ones if there are two different types in one checkout. That may seem obvious but some e-commerce softwar, you can't apply shipping to some products and not to others.

Barbara Pearn: If it's all one order, and shipping is applied to the cart, then that's fine isn't it?

Barbara Pearn: Ok, so you want to be able to set a "shipping charges apply" type value to Products. Then if any item in the cart has that value as "true", then it would ask for their Shipping choice. If all items are "false", then don't ask.
