Ecommerce - New "Unit Type" Field

It's typically necessary to specify a "unit type" along with a price to give it context. Prices are per: pound, dozen, six pack, 190mL jar, bunch, pallet, etc. While you can create a custom field set (and painstakingly attach them 1-by-1 to products) it seems to be making something essential to product pricing an option requiring a good deal more effort.
Could we please add a unit type field to products?
